Combat or biker boots are the perfect choice to keep you warm while also adding a bit of an edge to your outfit. They toughen up your look while being practical and also more versatile than you might think. You can pair them with your summer dresses and add a leather jacket, or pair them with jeans and sweaters when it gets even colder.

Loafers and brogues take their inspiration from menswear. But this season, the most on-trend loafers have a heel. This combines a timeless trend with some added height if you want to look taller some days. These shoes are perfect for the office and after hours if you go for dinner. If you usually wear pumps, heeled loafers are a great alternative. Pair with tailored trousers or jeans.

Square toes

Square toes were very much on trend in the 1990s and 2000s, so you may already have some in the back of your closet. By choosing a square-toe style, you can update any type of shoe, from boots to heels or flats. If you want to make a statement and ensure everyone notices your shoes, choose a bold color.

Thigh-high boots

Okay, these aren’t for everyone, and we aren’t suggesting that you wear your thigh-high boots like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. But thigh-high boots can look very chic and sophisticated. Choose beautiful, natural materials like leather or suede – suede adds lovely texture to your outfit for fall. Wear over your skinny jeans, or wear with a midi or maxi dress. Choose a dress that has a slit in the thigh so you can see your boots.

Mules

Mules have an effortless elegance and an old money feel, and they’re particularly on trend now. From flat mules to heeled versions, they’re all on trend, so choose the height you like most. Just be sure your mules fit well; they don’t offer as much support as shoes with ankle straps.

Pointed toes

We’ve already shown you square toes. But if they aren’t for you, don’t worry—pointed toes are also very much on trend. The great thing about pointed toes is that even if you choose a flat pair, they can give a leg-lengthening effect. Perfect for work, evening events, and just dressing up your jeans.

Fluffy shoes

Add a playful touch to your outfit with a pair of fluffy shoes. Just be sure that the fluff won’t drag on the ground and get dirty. Or, for a casual look, look for boots that are lined with shearling or that have faux fur details.

Okay, let’s get started on our list of favorite coats for fall 2024 with the classic trench. You really can’t go wrong with a trench coat for transitional seasons. Either opt for a very classic trench or choose a trench with a twist, such as a different color, material, or oversized details.

The peacoat has a structured, retro feel that never goes out of style, and this fall, it has been reimagined with modern details. Traditionally known for its wool fabric and double-breasted design, the peacoat has been updated in a variety of colors and materials. This season, you’ll find bright colors and oversized buttons. Peacoats can be very versatile, going well with jeans and sweaters or over a pantsuit for work.

Checks and plaid

Checks, tartan and plaid are always on trend and are beautiful patterns to wear in Fall. So, it may be that you already have some of this print in your wardrobe. You could wear top to toe print or simply opt for a check shirt with your jeans, or check pants with a plain top. You can also mix different sizes of check as Chanel did with the outfit (below, center).

Shiny leather

Fall is a great time to start to experiment with different textures. We love that designers got colorful with their leather, rather than opting for only traditional black or brown. You can wear your leather as any part of your outfit and be on trend, so long as you opt for a color that isn’t the norm.

Roll necks

Another style perennial! Perhaps you just need to reach to the back of your closet, or you might want to refresh your basics by choosing a new turtle or roll neck top. Choose slimline roll necks and you can layer then under other clothes like pinafore dresses or white shirts, or opt for a cozy, chunky rollneck and keep the rest of your outfit slimline.

Leopard is one of those perennial prints that never dates, so you can invest in leopard print, safe in the knowledge that you will be able to wear it year after year. Knitwear is always a style staple of any Fall and winter wardrobe. But this season, think about elevating how you wear your knitwear. So, rather than simply wearing a simple outfit of a sweater and jeans, wear your knitwear for dresses, suits, and coordinates.

Okay, we’re not suggesting that you go out looking as if you are going to a fancy dress party, but you can update your existing looks by adding a subtle take on Western style. Barrel legs

Every season, there is a standout trouser style on the catwalks that makes its way to online stores and the high street. This season, that silhouette is the barrel style. Barrel leg trousers have a unique shape as they are wider at the hips and thighs, and taper down to the ankles.

This is different from more familiar straight, wide or skinny leg pants, so it may take some getting used to. Because they add volume around the hips and thighs, avoid these if you want to downplay your pear shape. They can work well for the inverted triangle as they can add balance or give the rectangle shape more curves.

Winter florals

While florals are usually a spring style staple, there were lots of flowers on the Fall catwalks too. Look out for florals against darker backgrounds. Or, wear your lighter florals with jeans or wide pants, or opt for a pale coat over a darker outfit.

In this article, we’re concentrating on the color trends for this season, but if you want to think ahead, the fall catwalks were full of reds, plum, orange, greens, and gray.

Red is always on trend. If you want to be sure you’re choosing the most of-the-moment red, then look out for a cherry red that incorporates a little bit of blue, rather than an orangey red.

Every shade of blue featured on the 2024 catwalks, but the specific shade of blue that was everywhere was the sky blue shade shown above.

So, you could already have some of these in your closet. Look and see what you already have, and what you might like to add to update your looks for this season.

Peep toes

These shoes only work if you’re happy with how your toes look. But if you have had a pedicure and are ready for warmer weather, it’s a great way to add a bit of an edge to your looks. You can wear it with all of your dresses and skirts. We particularly love the shorter ankle boot styles with peep toes.

What is great about cropped pants is that they show off your ankles so if this is part of your body you like, this hem length is perfect for you. If you have shorter legs, then you need to wear cropped pants with more caution. When the hem visually cuts across your legs, it can make your legs look shorter. You can get around this by wearing a high-waisted style or wearing heels.

It is flattering as it creates a waist with the blouson style and isn’t as low as the dresses that designers showcased.

Just as high waists are great if you have a longer torso in comparison to your legs, low waists are good if you have long legs and a shorter torso.

Classic court shoes

Let’s start with a classic. You can’t go wrong with black court shoes, which are always on trend. Many designers chose to go back to basics for Fall 2023 and featured timeless trends that won’t date.

Opt for a heel height that’s comfortable for you rather than choosing the four-inch heels showcased on the catwalks. Wear with tailoring or to dress up your jeans.

Pointed flats

If you prefer flats, there were plenty of comfy flats on the catwalks, too. Particularly on trend, this season are pointy rather than round toes. If you’re concerned about your legs looking short, avoid shoes with ankle straps, as they can visually cut across your legs. But, if you love your ankles, wear them as they draw attention there.

A trench coat is always a style staple for transitional weather as winter turns to spring or summer turns to Fall, because it protects you from the elements without adding a lot of extra bulk. Butter

What’s great about this hue is that while it can be worn with all the same colors as white, it has a warmer tone that doesn’t look as ‘harsh’ for autumn.

Many designers chose to mix two trends in one by using butter colors for their leather jackets, pants, and skirts. You could also look out for a shirt or sweater in butter with your black pants.

Fall fashion trends 2023: Tailoring

Sharp tailoring has never been out of style. But it’s even more on trend for Fall 2023 than ever. At one point, matchy-matchy suits fell out of favor, as they were seen as old-fashioned. But designers including Balmain, Zimmermann and Ferragamo have brought them bang up-to-date. In fact, most designers opted for at least one suit on their Fall catwalks.

Choose a pant suit rather than a skirt. Wear your suit for the office or for dinner, or dress it down with sneakers rather than heels. Or, wear a suit for a formal event rather than a dress. You can always wear your suit as separates on other days to create more looks.

Dark florals

Usually the preserve of spring and summer, florals have been given a makeover for Fall with dark backgrounds against paler flowers. Choose a dark floral dress for evening or add a floral top to your favorite pants or jeans. If you’ve been wearing a floral dress for summer, you can always keep it among your Fall outfits by adding a moto jacket or blazer, tights and boots.

They say fashion comes full circle and the 50s silhouette is back. The circle skirt was embraced by Christian Dior post-war and it’s back in the Fall fashion 2023 trends. Opt for a midi or a maxi style. Wear your circle skirt for parties, or with a t-shirt or sweater for a more casual look.

A circle skirt can be flattering on many body shapes. If you’re a pear, it can help to disguise wider hips and thighs. If you’re an inverted triangle, it will balance out your wider shoulders. If you’re a rectangle, it will create curves. And, if you’re an hourglass, it wil highlight your waist.

Wearable art

Fashion should, of course, be beautiful to look at. And designers took this mantra to heart for Fall 2023. Look out for clothes with prints that look just like a painting. Dresses and coats with art-style prints are particularly on-trend. For a more subtle take on the trend, wear a painting-print shirt with your jeans.

Tuxedo dressing

Take your inspiration from menswear this season, and wear a tuxedo rather than a dress for your parties. Opt for a full tuxedo for more formal events, and style with heels and a clutch bag. For a less formal take, wear a tuxedo jacket and camisole with your jeans for a dinner date.

Denim re-imagined

Who says denim has to be casual? Designers for the Fall 2023 runways beg to differ. Denim skirts were back in fashion for summer, and the trend continues into Fall. Don’t limit wearing denim to your jeans. Designers like Rokh, Balmain and Nina Ricci took denim and crafted it into very sophisticated complete-look shapes.

As much as it’s great to add a few new trends into your closet to keep it updated, it’s also essential to have wardrobe basics that will act as the foundations to any outfit. So, we’re pleased to see designers concentrating on basics for Fall 2023. Wear your white shirt with anything from your jeans to leather pants, or tucked into a full skirt. Designers also featured plenty of classic blazers and pairs of jeans.

80s shoulders

Power dressing is back! We’re not suggesting you go as wide as the shoulders featured on the runways. However, adding a subtle shoulder pad can be a great way to balance your silhouette if you have narrow shoulders and want to create the illusion of more width, or if you are a pear shape and want to create the illusion of an hourglass shape, for example.

Everything in leather

Leather is a style staple every winter and fall, but this time around it definitely felt like there was more of it than ever on the catwalks. Designers sent everything from dresses to jackets to pants down the runways in leather; much of it in bright shades rather than the usual black or brown you might expect. Many designers also chose to give their leather texture with a mock croc style.

While leather isn’t usually a material you would think of for evening dresses, Alexander McQueen created a beautiful, fitted, asymmetric neckline dress, and Bottega Veneta opted for co-ords. So, you can see you can wear your leather as formally or casually as you want.

Low-rise

Okay, some of the skirts and pants on the catwalks really are very low-rise – the kind of look we used to see from Britney Spears a couple of decades ago. But, given that high rises have been on trend recently, we wanted to show you that there is an alternative.

Obviously, you don’t have to go as low as the designer looks. But, if you do have a shorter torso in comparison to your legs (check our article on your vertical body shape), then low-rise styles may suit you better than high-rise as they will create visual balance. Fall fashion trends 2023: Velvet

Velvet is one of those fabrics that can be a bit old-fashioned. So, you really need to make sure you’re wearing it in a modern way. Choose a velvet top to wear with your jeans, tuck a white shirt into a velvet skirt, opt for velvet pants and a blazer, or wear a velvet coat.

Sheer

Sheer is always a trend. But designers definitely took it to extremes for Fall. Rather than baring as much flesh as seen on the catwalks, wear a camisole under your sheer top, or choose a top or dress which has sheer sleeves rather than being see-thru all over. Dress up your jeans by wearing a sheer blouse.

Polka dots

Polka dots are one of those perennial prints that don’t date as they’re classic and elegant. Although, of course, at times they are more on trend than others. Fall 2023 is one of those times when they most definitely are. Designers including Miu Miu and Chanel opted for polka dots. Interestingly, Balmain chose the classic look of polka dots, combined with the circle skirt trend from above, and gave them an edge by making them into studs.

Channel your inner Julia Roberts (remember that brown polka dot dress in Pretty Woman?) or Marilyn Monroe in that pencil dress from the Seven Year Itch. The Princess of Wales is also a huge fan of polka dots. Choose a polka dot dress, or wear a polka dot shirt with your jeans.

Bold and subtle stripes

Another classic print, stripes won’t go out of date. Vertical stripes are a great choice if you want to look taller and slimmer. Stripes look particularly good on rectangular body shapes as they work in harmony with your athletic figure.

Choose business-like pinstripes, or opt for broader, more dramatic stripes. We like how Dries Van Noten (below, right) paired menswear-inspired stripes with a feminine skirt.

Checks

Checks are often on trend for Fall, and the Fall fashion trends 2023 are no exception. Designers chose everything from a full-on top-to-toe check look to wearing a check blazer. Wearing a check blazer with jeans (seen at Zimmerman, below, centre) is our favorite way to style this print. Or, choose check pants with a plain t-shirt or shirt.

Ruching, draping and cinching

It’s always flattering to look for clothes that don’t cling, but instead have some draping to disguise parts of our body we want to downplay. Look out for tops and dresses which already have draping built in for party season. We also like the idea of creating our own draping by using a brooch, as seen at Coperni (below, right).

Fall fashion trends 2023: Preppy

Preppy styling has never not been on trend. But if you love this way of dressing, then you’ll definitely be having a style moment this Fall. Lots of designers opted for preppy looks, including Coperni, Stella McCartney and Prada.

Feathers and fringe

Winter and Fall are the perfect time to add some glamour and embellishment to your outfits.
