Are you wondering what to wear for a Christmas party? Then you’ve definitely come to the right place. Below, you’ll find 11 beautiful Christmas party outfits to make sure you’re never stuck when it comes to ideas on how to dress for a Christmas party.

There are plenty of Christmas party outfits to choose from – whether you’re able to see friends and loved ones this year or you just want to make a small occasion at home more special…

What to wear to a Christmas party: What to consider

Before we get into lots of lovely Christmas party outfit inspiration, here are a few things to consider when choosing your party outfit this year.

How formal is your event?

What kind of party are you attending? Is it a laid-back affair with friends and family or a more formal event? Is there a dress code you need to adhere to?

Will your outfit choice make you feel confident?

Does your outfit make you feel good? A dress can be the most incredible designer creation, but if you don’t feel good about it, there’s no point in buying it.

Think about the parts of your body you are happy with and what you want to cover up.

For example, do you feel more confident in a dress with sleeves? Do you want a dress with ruching to hide your tummy? Are you happy to show off your legs, shoulders or a little bit of your back?

Do you want to stand out or fit in?

What kind of impression do you want to create when you enter the party? Do you want to fit in or stand out?

For example, there are likely to be a lot of little black dresses at any party.

Do you want to wear your own version, or would you like to wear something different in a bright color, or opt for a tuxedo suit, for example?

What should the dress code be at a Christmas party?

There’s no rule about what the dress code should be at your Christmas party. Just decide how formal, informal, or fancy you want it to be. You can give your guests a dress code if you wish – it can be as silly as wearing a Christmas sweater – or just let them decide.

How to dress for a Christmas party?

If you have an invitation, go by the dress code the host has set. Otherwise, think about the formality of the party, where it is being held, and, of course, your style personality.

What colors are best to wear to a Christmas party?

Anything goes, but if you want to be particularly festive, then opt for red, burgundy and metallics.

What is dressy casual for a holiday party?

Think about mixing formal with less formal pieces. You really can’t go wrong with a pair of dark jeans and a special top.

Christmas outfits inspiration

Hopefully, that’s got you thinking about what you want to wear for the upcoming festive season.

Now, here is some Christmas party outfit inspiration. Let me know in the comments at the bottom what Christmas party outfit you will wear.

Party dresses – outfit #1: Red

Red is an excellent color for women over 40. It is an especially popular option at holiday time, for obvious reasons.

When red is also a trend, as it is this season, it is even easier to find the right piece for the occasion.

Whatever type of coloring you have, there is a red that is right for you.

Check out this piece on the best color trends to wear for fall 2024 for some stylish scarlet red looks. If you’re leaning more towards fuchsia or pink, then that will work too.

Red looks beautiful when worn with tan or with crisp winter white and black. You could also add a print or metallic shoes. Add some festive flair to your outfit by with some crystal embellishments, metallic accessories or faux fur.

Sylvia @sylviacolella above  (read her style interview here) chooses a red that leans towards purple for a lovely winter look.

Christmas party jumpsuits – inspiration #2: Jumpsuits

We know there’s always the obvious issue with jumpsuits. But, as long as you can easily unfasten your jumpsuit without help, you should be fine even when nature calls.

You could opt for a bright or sequin jumpsuit or a classic neutral shade such as navy, which would look lovely teamed with metallics.

Another option is to choose a little black jumpsuit instead of a little black dress, and combine with crisp winter white. Jumpsuits can be equally as glamorous as a long dress.

We love the stylish black jumpsuit (below). Wear with a camisole underneath Style with neutral accessories.

Christmas party tops – outfit #3: Embellishment

A fun trend lately is pearls or crystals, embellishing everything from hats to gloves to shoes.

They’re also big on jeans. If you’re looking for a way to dress casually for a holiday event but still keep it festive, you could try pearl-embellished denim or a top with crystals worn with jeans or pants.

An outfit featuring a beautifully embellished top and jeans or pants could get you ready for a more casual get-together. Or choose a skirt for a more formal look. You could opt for a crystal-embellished blazer to dress up your jeans.

Another idea is to team an embellished sweater with a sequin skirt. You can then wear your sweater with your favorite jeans.

Party dresses for women – outfit #4: A little black dress

A little black dress really is one of the hardest working items in your closet and should definitely be one of the wardrobe essentials you invest in.

A great little black dress can take you anywhere, and the great thing about it is you can change up your accessories year after year to make it look completely different each party season.

There is a reason black has remained a popular color for the evenings over the century. Darker colors are less memorable and so we can wear them much more frequently.

You can choose a flattering yet understated dress that adds interest to your outerwear, shoes, and accessories.

Use your accessories to up your game. A statement necklace or earrings will add further glamour.

Christmas attire #5: BURGUNDY

Burgundy is very much the color of the season. Opt for top-to-toe burgundy for a very on-trend look. A burgundy sweater and satin skirt will give you a great mix of textures. Add dramatic flair with gold shoes or boots and gold jewelry.

Christmas party attire #6: Velvet

Velvet is a sure bet for almost any holiday event, and it is particularly big right now, so it’s pretty easy to find something in velvet that is right for you.

Velvet can be extremely versatile. You can choose a velvet dress, top, or velvet pants like those in the outfit idea below.

Wearing velvet with jeans or wide-leg pants brings a luxe touch to a casual outfit. A velvet suit is very festive, and you can wear as separates too to create different outfits – you could wear the blazer with your jeans, or the pants with a sweater.

Christmas party outfit #7: Metallics

Christmas is often associated with sparkling lights and shiny baubles.

To make sure you don’t look like Christmas tinsel, opt for sophisticated metallic pieces that will not only add some shine to your outfit but also a touch of class.

Go bold with a metallic dress or skirt. Metallics could also provide the perfect way to update your little black dress. Simply pop a metallic bolero over the top and you are ready to go. Or, for a look that mixes casual and formal, you could wear a metallic skirt and sweater.

Or for an easy mix of formal and casual, you could team a drapey metallic top with your dark-wash jeans.

Christmas party outfit #9: Lace

Another fabric, like velvet, which screams party, lace can be worn formally or casually.

You could choose a lace dress for a formal party or dinner or a lace top to wear with pants or jeans if you want a more casual look for a family lunch.

You could wear a lace cover-up over your sleeveless dress. Or wear a top or dress with lace sleeves – perfect if you prefer to cover your upper arms.

Another shiny option for the festive season, anything with sequins always looks beautiful at Christmas time.

Sequin skirts and pants are particularly on trend and can be dressed up even more with a camisole top or silk shirt or given a more casual vibe with a sweater.

One of our favorite looks is to wear a sequin skirt with a cozy sweater or sequin pants and skirts with a blazer. Or, you could opt for full-on sequins with a sequin suit that you can also wear as separates or a sequin jumpsuit.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s the perfect time to plan your Christmas outfits. In this article, we’re embracing chic, flattering, and festive styles that balance sophistication and comfort. So, whether you’re attending a cozy family gathering or an elegant holiday soirée, you’ll find all the outfits for Xmas you need below.

What to think about when choosing your outfits for Xmas

Before we move on to some great outfits for Xmas, what should you think about when selecting your festive looks?

Is it comfortable?

Of course, you should be stylish, and you may want to make a statement during Christmas. But there’s no need to forgo comfort. If you’ll be cooking dinner, playing with children or grandchildren, sitting on the floor to open presents, going for a festive walk, or whatever you love to do during the holiday season, you definitely want to be comfy too.

Does it suit the occasion and the weather?

A question to ask yourself no matter what you’re doing. For Christmas, think about the type of day you’ll be having, how casual or formal you want to be, and whether you’ll be warm enough.

Can I wear it again?

Don’t choose anything you can only wear for Christmas. Think about how you could style it for other occasions or times of year. We’ve put together a Christmas capsule for you and used some of the same pieces for different events.

Outfits for Xmas

Okay, let’s move straight into some of the most stylish outfits we’ve spotted for this year’s festivities.

Winter dressing is an art form that balances the need for warmth with a desire for style. But the cold season doesn’t have to mean sacrificing fashion for function. Below, you’ll find our guide to dressing well while staying cozy during the frosty months. Let’s take a look at how to dress in winter.

What is the best way to dress for winter?

Below, you’ll find all of our tips for dressing well during winter. It’s all about layering strategically so you can stay cozy without losing your sense of style.

What is the warmest thing to wear in the winter?

How to dress in winter: all the tips you need to stay stylish and warm | 40plusstyle.com

It isn’t about wearing one thing, but about choosing your layers and materials wisely to keep as much heat in as possible. Jona @the50plusgirl above opts for a cozy coat, and makes sure to keep her head warm too.

Get her look with this similar sweater, jacket, leggings, boots and beanie.

What is the 3-layer rule for winter?

The three-layer rules for winter dressing is a simple and effective method for staying warm and comfortable in cold weather. It involves wearing three distinct layers, each with a specific purpose, to create insulation and protect against the elements.

Base layers are your first defense against the cold. Choose lightweight, breathable pieces to trap heat close to your body, keeping you warm without adding bulk. Look for materials like thermal blends and merino wool.

Then add your middle layer. This is your insulation layer, designed to trap heat. Fleece jackets, wool sweaters, and down vests are good choices.

Finally, your outermost layer should shield you from wind, rain, and snow. A waterproof and windproof coat with insulation is essential if it’s really chilly where you are. Otherwise, you can consider options like a long wool overcoat.

What not to wear during winter?

There are no hard and fast rules. You can wear your summer dress with tights, boots, and a jacket if you want. The key to dressing in winter is not to prioritize style over function. You need both to work together.

how to dress in winter

Let’s look at more tips for winter dressing.

Art of layering

First, layering is super important. Be sure to employ the rule of three as outlined above. You want a base layer, a middle layer, and an outer layer to trap heat and keep you warm. If you’re really cold, you don’t have to stick to three layers. You could add a camisole and a T-shirt under the layers below.

Invest in key winter accessories

Accessories are always important for adding the finishing touches to your outfit, but they’re even more essential in colder weather. Keep your hat, neck, hands, and feet warm, and you’ll help keep everyone toasty.

Choose the right fabrics

Fabric choice is another key consideration. You’re looking for fabrics that insulate, like wool, that can trap warm air close to your body or those that wick moisture away to prevent you from getting sweaty and then cold. Choose fleece, wool, or cashmere. And, when it’s really cold, opt for down or a down substitute.

Boots rather than shoes

Swap out your shoes for boots and wear them with tights, cashmere socks, or leggings. You’re likely to want three different types of boots to see you through the season—a pair of knee-highs, ankle-length booties, and boots that can withstand rain and show. With the prints and colors you choose, you can still let your style personality shine through.

Colors and prints

You need to be warm, so you need to choose the right materials. But one thing you do have plenty of flexibility over is the colors and patterns you opt for. Choose bold shades and prints to add impact or soft neutrals if you lean towards a minimal style personality.

Outerwear

Making a careful selection of outerwear is important in colder weather. Your coat will be the first thing anyone notices as you walk in from outside, so choose a style you love. A bright color will get you noticed for all the right reasons. Or opt for a style with faux fur or shearling for a cozy feel. Choosing oversized outerwear will ensure you can fit your knitwear underneath.

Choose boots with tred

Stay safe and stylish by ensuring your boots have tred on their soles so you don’t slip during inclement weather. The good news is boots with chunky soles are very much on trend so that you can be practical and chic.

It’s unlikely that you want to look wider or bigger (although you may want to use layers to balance your figure). Thankfully, layering for winter doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style for warmth. With the right clothes and approach, you can stay cozy without feeling weighed down or bulky. Below, you’ll find our favorite tips for building sleek, stylish winter layers so you can layer for winter without looking bulky.

How to not look bulky when layering?

This article has many tips for layering without adding unwanted bulk. You need to consider how balanced your outfit is so you don’t add width all over, even when adding additional clothing. Take a look below for more important factors to consider.

How do I complement my figure in winter clothes?

The great thing about layering is that you can actually use it to look taller and slimmer if that’s what you want. Read on for more tips. However, a major one is to add a long, lean layer in one color over a ‘column’ of a different color. This way, you can draw the eye vertically and create the illusion of extra length.

If you’re interested in using this technique, then also take a look at our article on how to look taller and slimmer.

How to layer for winter

Let’s dig into how to layer for winter in more detail.

1. Start with a lightweight base layer

When considering how to layer for winter, start with your base layers. Choosing the right base layer can make all the difference in staying warm enough during the cooler months. Your first layer is essential for insulation and regulating your body temperature. Look for a fitted, moisture-wicking thermal top, a slim turtleneck, or a long-sleeve bodysuit in a breathable fabric. Choosing neutral colors will give you versatility that you can build on.

UNIQLO is a good go-to for your base layers. We like their HEATTECH range.

Nora @juststylela above (read her style interview here) shows how to layer a sleeveless sweater over a long-sleeved top.

Get her look with this similar shirt, vest (another option here), jeans, booties, bag, earrings and sunglasses.

2. Don’t forget your bottom half

When you think about a thermal base layer, a vest or T-shirt probably springs to mind first. But don’t forget your bottom half. When temperatures drop, keeping your legs warm can significantly improve your comfort level. Add thermal leggings or fleece-lined tights to keep your legs warm without adding too much bulk. These are designed to insulate while fitting closely to the body.

3. Add a mid-layer for warmth

Once you have your base layer, add a mid-layer to trap heat and add an extra layer of insulation. A thin sweater, cardigan, or fleece works well in a fitted style. For added warmth, consider cashmere, which adds warmth without excess fabric.

4. Look for thin insulating fabrics

If you choose suitable fabrics, you can opt for thinner materials without needing to choose thick, bulky options. Wool, cashmere, and synthetic options designed for insulation, like fleece and lightweight thermals, are excellent choices. Bamboo is another great option. Then you can layer up with merino wool and quilted down.

5. Don’t underestimate your camisoles

They’re the thinnest layer you will find, but adding a camisole under everything can make a huge difference. Camis help trap air pockets and, therefore, keep you even warmer. Choose silk for a luxurious feel under your other layers.

6. Wear structured outer layers

If you want to be sure you still have shape while wearing your layers, choose structured outerwear. So opt for a tailored wool coat with a belted waist, or a fitted cut to create shape. This can give you a defined silhouette even when wearing multiple layers.

Kimba @kimbalikes above opts for a classic long coat that you can wear belted to emphasize your waist or open to create long, lean lines.

7. Consider length when choosing your layers

Choosing longer layers can create a streamlined, elongated look, even when layering up bulkier pieces. A longer outer layer, like a knee-length vest, draws the eye vertically, which adds a balanced and flattering effect to your outfit. Keep your underlayers fitted if you choose a bulkier layer, such as a puffer vest. For example, a mid-thigh vest over a slim sweater and leggings can provide warmth without looking boxy.

8. Use color to streamline your layers

You can create a streamlined, elongating effect that creates vertical lines rather than width by dressing in a column of color underneath and then adding a long vest or coat in a different color on top.

9. Use accessories for warmth

Don’t forget the power of accessories to add not just style but warmth. Scarves, hats, and gloves will keep you warm in targeted areas, often meaning you don’t need such bulky clothing elsewhere. Choose cashmere or wool scarves and hats and cashmere-lined leather gloves for a polished look.

GreenMount Cashmere Hat Gloves Scarf Set | 40plusstyle.com

10. Choose slim-fit pants

If you have a lot of layers on your top half, choosing slimmer jeans, pants, or leggings can help you balance out your outfit so you don’t look ‘wide’ all over.

11. Think about closing any gaps

Wherever you have skin showing, you will be letting the cold in. Now, we’re not suggesting you opt for a face-covering balaclava. But you should think about filling in any gaps, like wearing a scarf to cover your neck and opting for socks that are long enough to cover everything between your boots and pants.

12. Add a belt

If your coat doesn’t feature a belt, you can always add one on the top to create a waistline. A wider belt generally works best with your outerwear.

B-Low the Belt Milla Leather Belt | 40plusstyle.com

13. Choose fleece or faux fur lined boots

Keeping your feet warm will go a long way toward keeping the rest of you warm. Choose thermal, fleece, or faux fur-lined boots to keep your extremities cozy so the rest of your clothing doesn’t have to work so hard.

UGG Ultra Mini Classic Boot | 40plusstyle.com

UGG Ultra Mini Classic Boot

14. Don’t forget your body shape

As with all of your outfits, remember your body shape when you put together your winter layers. You’re always looking to create balance. For example, if you have a pear shape, then adding a wider layer on top can balance out wider hips, while if you have an inverted triangle shape, you want to do the opposite. If you are an hourglass, you may like to show off your waistline so you don’t look wider than you are.

Neutral tones are essential in every wardrobe, especially for the colder months when layers and textures come into their own. With shades like beige, cream, camel, gray, and classic black, neutral outfits offer a timeless, polished look while being versatile enough to mix and match. Take a look below at how to style neutral clothes, shoes, and accessories for chic winter and fall outfits.

What should I wear between fall and winter?

Adaline wears a wool coat and jeans | 40plusstyle.com

When it comes to transitional weather, it’s all about layers. You want to be able to alter your outfit as the day goes by and temperatures change.

Adaline @sdmomstyles above shows off an ideal outfit for winter and fall. If you want to add extra versatility, you could wear a shirt under a sweater so you can take off your knitwear if you are too warm.

Get her look with this similar sweater, coat, jeans, boots, bag and necklace.

What colors not to wear in fall?

There are no rules. You can embrace traditional fall shades or choose unexpected colors. This article is all about neutral colors and how to wear them in cooler months.

Can you wear white in the fall and winter?

Of course. White can look beautiful in winter and fall because the ‘usual’ colors to wear during these seasons are darker. Just make sure you’re thinking about practicality as well as style. So, if it’s rainy where you are, keep your white towards the top of your outfit to avoid getting your white pants or boots dirty.

How to create a neutral wardrobe?

The key to creating a neutral wardrobe is choosing different textures and shapes that add interest to subtle shades.

The beauty of neutrals is they won’t ever be off-trend, so you can invest in them safe in the knowledge you can wear for years to come.

Let’s start with our favorite neutral clothes, shoes, and accessories that are stylish and appropriate for cooler months.

Then, read on for a capsule wardrobe where we put them together.

Neutral tops for winter and fall

Plaid and checks are timeless patterns that come back into style every fall. But figuring out how to wear them in a modern, chic way can feel tricky. The good news is that plaid and checks are incredibly versatile and can be styled in ways that are both contemporary and sophisticated. Take a look below at how to embrace this classic fall trend, while staying true to your personal style.

Is plaid in style for fall 2024?

Plaid comes back around every fall. If you walk into any store or look online, you’ll see lots of plaid for fall. The great thing about plaid is that it is so versatile, so you’ll find lots of timeless yet on-trend clothing, no matter what your personal style.

Are plaid dress pants in style in 2024?

Definitely. And, you can dress them up for work or dinner with a camisole or blouse and blazer, or go casual with sneakers and a sweater.

What are the rules for wearing plaid?

There really aren’t any rules. You can wear plaid in so many ways—style as casually or formally as you want. An easy way to think about it is to wear plaid bottoms and a plain top, or vice versa.

Are plaid skirts in style in 2024?

Absolutely. Designers like Vivienne Westwood often showcase plaid skirts, and they look stylish when worn with your fall sweaters.

Plaid clothes and accessories

Before we get to how to style your plaid, let’s look at some of the chicest plaid clothes, shoes, and accessories we’ve found in stores and then how to wear them.

Plaid tops

Starting with plaid tops, you can opt for any style that suits your personal aesthetic. Choose dressier checks to dress up your jeans, or cozy shirts and sweaters for casual days. You can wear the shirt open as a shacket.

How to style plaid

Okay, so now that you’ve chosen your favorite plaid pieces, let’s look at some stylish ideas for incorporating them into your outfits.

1. Opt for tailored silhouettes

While you might think of plaid as a casual print for shirts and shackets, opting for tailored pieces like a plaid blazer can really elevate the print. Pair a tailored plaid blazer with your favorite jeans. You can layer over a lightweight sweater for extra warmth.

2. Incorporate plaid with your accessories

If you don’t want to commit to a plaid dress or coat, then incorporate checks into your outfit with your accessories. A plaid scarf with your existing neutral coat, or a plaid bag against a plain outfit will work beautifully and will add a pop of pattern without overwhelming your existing style.

Fall is often synonymous with rich textures, bold patterns, and autumnal hues. So if you prefer a minimalist aesthetic, the season can feel a bit overwhelming. But, if you gravitate toward clean lines, neutral palettes, and understated elegance, there’s no need to change your style personality during fall. Instead, focus on fall fashion essentials that will keep you looking effortlessly chic, that suit the season, and stay true to your minimalist approach.

Let’s examine the perfect fall fashion essentials for minimalists and how to combine them to create stylish, pared-down outfits.

1. The perfect wool coat

A structured wool coat in a neutral shade like gray or camel is a cornerstone of your minimal fall and winter wardrobe. Look for sleek, simple silhouettes that offer warmth and elegance. The key is to find a high-quality coat that you really love that will last you multiple seasons without going out of style.

It’s easy to get caught up in putting together the most stylish outfits for special occasions or to have your eye caught by chic eveningwear while you’re shopping. But how about your casual outfits? They deserve just as much care and thought because they are what you are likely to wear most of the time. That’s why we’re diving into chic casual wear outfits in this article to help you look stylish and put together every day.

What is an example of a casual outfit?

When you think of casual wear, what do you think of first? Probably jeans and a T-shirt or sweater with sneakers, right? We do have those options for you, but there is also lots of other inspiration below.

What is considered casual wear?

Casual wear is anything you feel comfortable and relaxed in, suited to everyday activities rather than formal occasions. Focus on ease and practicality mixed with style.

What is a casual outfit for ladies?

A casual outfit is whatever you feel comfortable in. Nicola @40notfrumpy shows how you can wear flats with your T-shirt dress.

Recreate her outfit with this similar dress, loafers and bag.

How can I look stylish but casual?

Looking both casual and stylish is about picking items that are comfortable but still have a chic edge. So, you might opt for jeans but choose a silk top to go with them, for example.

How to elevate your casual outfits

Choose interesting textures and prints, choose luxurious fabrics, look out for asymmetry, and mix more formal elements with your casual wear.

What to consider when choosing your casual wear

You want comfort, but you also want to look stylish. You’ll want to ensure you can mix and match your casual outfits to create different looks each day. Plus, on a practical note, you want to be able to machine wash your casual wear, and you won’t want to take it to the dry cleaners all the time.

casual outfits

So, with that said, let’s dive straight into a casual wear capsule wardrobe.

Casual wear tops

Starting with your casual tops, a denim shirt is great for wearing with more denim or mixing textures in your outfit. We love the cinched waist of the rag & bone top (below). A white shirt is great for layering, and we like the high-low hem detailing on the COS shirt – perfect to wear with leggings as it provides extra coverage.

Also look out for t-shirts that you can wear alone or layer with cardigans and blazers, and camisoles and tank tops in case you need extra warmth.

Jona @the50plusgirl above wears a white shirt and long denim skirt with her knee-high boots. You could easily add a sweater or cardigan to the look if you need extra warmth.

Get her look with this similar shirt, skirt, boots and bag.

Sweaters and cardigans

Talking of warmth, let’s move on to sweaters and cardigans. Choose a few different styles, so you have options for winter. You can add color or print to your winter outfits with your sweater. Choose a smarter cardigan if you want to elevate your outfit. You can also wear an open cardigan rather than a coat on days when it’s not rainy.

Dresses and skirts

Don’t shy away from incorporating dresses and skirts into your casual wardrobe. Shirt and T-shirt dresses are comfy and can be worn with sneakers and flats. Denim skirts are particularly on trend at the moment and are a great alternative to jeans. Plus, a sweater dress is a good choice for cooler weather.

As the weather cools, you definitely need a few stylish sweaters in your closet. Cozy and versatile, the best sweaters can be dressed up or down, depending on your plans. From chunky knits to sleek turtlenecks, you’re sure to find a style you love below. Let’s take a look at the must-have sweater styles this season and how to incorporate them into your closet to create chic sweater outfits.

What to consider when choosing a new sweater

Before we get into new season styles, what should you consider when choosing the right sweater for your lifestyle and body shape?

1. Material and fabric

Wool or cashmere are warm, soft, and breathable, perfect for colder weather. If you have a dressier occasion or want to elevate your everyday looks, choose cashmere. Cotton sweaters can be good for layering, and synthetic blends, while they won’t offer the same warmth or softness as natural fibers, can be easier to care for.

2. Fit and silhouette

Oversized sweaters are great for casual days, a more tailored sweater will look more polished, cropped sweaters will make your torso look shorter and legs look longer, and tunic styles will help to cover a belly.

3. Neckline style

The neckline of a sweater will play a big part in how flattering a sweater looks on you. For example, a v-neck creates long, lean lines and is flattering for most figures, a boat neck will create width and looks good on pear shapes, a turtleneck is great if you have a long neck, and a crewneck is a good everyday, casual choice. We’ve got some of each for you below.

Greetje in an orange outfit and jeans | 40plusstyle.com

Greetje @no_fear_of_fashion above (read her style interview here) shows how a boatneck sweater is a good choice with pants with a wider leg, as this creates balance in your silhouette. Note she’s incorporated this season’s leopard print with her booties.

Get her look with this similar sweater, pants, booties, handbag and earrings.

4. Color and pattern

Of course, this is a choice for any of your clothing, but as your sweater will be sitting against your face, make sure you choose a flattering shade. Opting for an on-trend color will update your casual jeans and sweater outfits.

5. Versatility and occasion

When and where do you want to wear your sweater? If it’s in the office or to dinner, you’ll want a sweater with a luxurious, polished feel, like a slimline cashmere sweater. But if you want warmth for the weekend, you could choose a chunkier style.

6. On-trend or classic?

Are you looking for an on-trend sweater, or do you want something completely timeless? If you’re investing in cashmere, you’ll want to be sure that the style is classic and won’t date. You could also opt for a very on-trend choice to update your existing outfits.

Sweater styles you need in your closet this fall and how to create stylish sweater outfits | 40plusstyle.com

You may usually think of sweaters to wear with your jeans, but Karen @styledbykaren above shows how you can wear your summer maxi skirts into fall and winter by adding a sweater and boots. This is a great idea when considering your sweater outfits for transitional weather.

Recreate her outfit with this similar sweater, skirt (printed option here), booties, bag and belt.

7. Care and maintenance

How much time and effort do you want to put into caring for your knitwear so your sweater outfits last? Synthetic blends tend to be machine washable, but more delicate fabrics will need a handwash (maybe your washing machine has this function) or dry cleaning. So, check the label and be honest with yourself about how you will take care of your sweaters so they last.

Sweater styles to choose this season

Okay, with that said, let’s look at some of the chicest sweaters we’ve found this season, and how you can style them for the most flattering effect.

Tunic sweaters

Long tunics are perfect for wearing over leggings, slim jeans, and pants in cooler weather. They’re also great for hiding a belly. Choose a long asymmetric style for the most flattering event.

crewneck

A crewneck is an absolute classic and tends to look more casual than other styles. You can mix up casual and formal by teaming your crewneck with a skirt and trench coat. Choose a denim trench coat for a modern take on this classic.

Check out this similar sweater (another option here), skirt (another option here), sneakers and bag.

v-neck

V-necks are not only classic, but they are super flattering. The neckline creates the look of a long neck and has a slimming event because it draws the eye vertically.

boatneck sweater

We love boatnecks for adding subtle glamour to your outfits. They are great for giving the visual illusion of width at the neck, so they’re good if you have a pear shape as they balance out the look of wider hips.

turtle neck

Turtlenecks are polished and timeless, and can bring an old money look to your outfit. You can wear turtlenecks alone with your pants, jeans or skirts. Or, use turtlenecks for layering and wear under a pinafore dress or shirt. Opt for neutral shades for maximum versatility. Turtlenecks look particularly good if you have a long neck.

We love all of the beautiful colors in Georgette @grownandcurvywoman‘s outfit above (read her style interview here). She keeps her outfit harmonious by picking up the blues of her sweater and the pink of her coat with the print of her skirt.

Steal her look with this similar sweater, coat, skirt, pumps, clutch and earrings.

chunky knit

A chunky knit sweater will keep you cozy and has a chic casual vibe. Its slouchy, relaxed style works well with leggings and slimmer jeans. Be aware that chunky knitwear will, obviously, add bulk. So, this can work well if you want to create the illusion of more width on the top half of your body while downplaying your hips and thighs in contrast – if you are a pear shape, for example.

wrap sweater

Wrap styles are very flattering on all body types because the v-neck creates long vertical lines, and the wrap creates a waistline. So, if you already have a wrap dress, how about choosing a wrap sweater too?

Cropped sweater

Cropped sweaters are very on-trend and perfect for creating an optical illusion. Wearing high-waisted pants or jeans with a cropped sweater can make your legs look longer in comparison to your torso. You can pop a longer shirt underneath if you want to make sure you cover your belly.

print sweater

A great way to update your favorite jeans is to choose a fun sweater with a print. Leopard print is always on trend, but it’s very on trend right now. You’ll see leopard print in all the stores you go into, so choosing a leopard print sweater is a good way to update your jeans or skirts.

The rehearsal dinner is a special prelude to the big day itself, offering an opportunity for the couple, family, and loved ones to come together in a more relaxed way before the wedding. It blends the excitement of what’s to come with a chance for bonding. But, when it comes to dressing for this occasion, what should you wear? This article has lots of stylish rehearsal dinner outfits for guests to make choosing a look easy.

What to consider when dressing for a rehearsal dinner

First, let’s look at what to think about, and then we’ll dive into some outfit suggestions.

1. Understand the dress code

Before starting to look for an outfit, it’s important to consider the dress code. The couple will set this, and it can be casual or formal.

  • Casual: You can wear a floaty dress, trousers with a blouse, or a jumpsuit. You might even be able to wear dark jeans and a smart top.
  • Semi-formal: The dress code for a rehearsal dinner is usually semi-formal. So, a cocktail or midi dress, a suit, or a jumpsuit will work.
  • Formal: This is the chance to up the glamour stakes. So you can go for a long evening dress or a tuxedo.

Psyche @economyofstyle above opts for a blouse and split hem pants outfit that would work well for a casual evening dinner.

Get her look with this similar blouse, pants, pumps (another option here), handbag and belt.

2. Consider the venue

The location of the rehearsal dinner will play a big role in your outfit choice. For instance, a beachside dinner will call for breezy, light fabrics, while a city rooftop restaurant could mean something more structured.

3. Play with colors and patterns

While you may want to be more reserved for the wedding itself, the rehearsal dinner is the perfect chance to be more playful with your outfit. Choose anything from jewel tones to bold patterns. You may want to choose something totally different from what you are wearing for the wedding itself.

4. Be comfortable

If you’re going to a rehearsal event involving dancing, you want to make sure you can move. Plus, you don’t want your outfit to dig in after you’ve eaten.

Rehearsal dinner outfit examples for you

Let’s look at some example outfits you could put together, depending on what the dress code says on your invitation.

Cocktail attire

You can’t go wrong with a cocktail dress for a cocktail event. While you will want to avoid white and bold colors that take the attention away from the bride during the ceremony, you can be more playful during the rehearsal dinner. Take a look at our article on what to wear to a cocktail party for more inspiration.

Depending on the time of year, you may have been invited to an outdoor rehearsal dinner. In that case, a floaty tea dress style will work. Choosing a subtly metallic material will add glamour to an otherwise casual shape. Wear with flats so your heels don’t get stuck in the grass.

As the weather cools, it can be tempting to put your dresses and skirts to the back of your closet and turn instead to jeans and pants. But we hope this article persuades you otherwise. Below, you’ll find the most stylish skirts for fall and how to wear them.

Styling tips for fall skirts

Let’s start with some initial styling tips before looking at the best skirt styles for fall, and what to wear them with.

1. Layering

Fall is all about layering, so add tights, leggings or long socks under your skirts for warmth and style. Add booties or knee-high boots, a short jacket, long coat or cardigan.

Also check out our article on how to layer like a pro for more tips

2. Footwear

Ankle boots, knee-high or thigh boots, loafers and sneakers are all great options to wear with fall skirts.

Nancy @nancysstyle above (read her style interview here) shows how you can style a lighter color skirt with darker shades for fall.

Check out this similar top, blazer, skirt, high boots, belt, necklace and sunglasses.

3. Outerwear

You can always break the ‘rules’, but generally a short jacket that ends at your waist, a long coat that ends just below your skirt, or a blazer will be good choices.

4. Accessories

Scarves, belts, and hats will elevate your fall skirt outfits. Choose accessories in new season colors to update your look.

Best skirt styles for fall – what to think about

1. Warmth

You want your skirt to keep you cozy when the weather cools down, so be sure to choose a skirt that will offer you protection from the elements rather than being too flimsy.

2. Material

Beautiful materials for fall include wool, leather, corduroy, and denim.

3. Versatility

You want to be able to wear your fall skirts with lots of options in your closet and with either flats, heels, or sneakers.

Eugenia @theeageofgrace above (read her style interview here) opts for an a-line skirt and styles with silver shoes and a denim jacket.

Best skirt styles for fall

Let’s move on to some of the best skirts you can choose for fall.

Leather is an excellent option for fall because it’s hardwearing and won’t let any cold breezes through. Plus, it adds an edge to your outfits. You can style a leather skirt with anything from sweaters and sneakers to a silk blouse and heels, so it’s a great investment.

At a time when flashy logos and the latest throwaway trends can often dominate the fashion scene, a growing movement is making its mark: quiet luxury style. We love this style as it embodies our love of buying less but making sure it is quality and that we can wear season after season.

Understated elegance, quality materials, and timeless styles characterize this style. It’s not about making a loud statement but about conveying refined sophistication. So, look below into the world of quiet luxury and how to incorporate this movement into your wardrobe.

If you are drawn to this style, check out our article on old money style, which features a similar aesthetic.

What is quiet luxury?

Before we dive in, let’s look at what quiet luxury is.

Quiet luxury is a style that embraces the idea that true luxury doesn’t need to shout to be noticed. It’s about wearing pieces that exude quality and timeless elegance, often without overt branding or flashing details. This trend values the intrinsic qualities of clothing – so think of quality fabrics, good tailoring, and timeless design rather than obvious logos and the latest trends.

Quiet luxury is the opposite of fast fashion. It is rooted in the belief that investing in fewer, better-made items is not only more sustainable but also looks classier and more stylish. It’s the sartorial equivalent of the phrase ‘less is more’.

Key elements of quiet luxury

If you want to embrace this viewpoint, what key elements should you look for?

1. High-quality materials

This is really important. The foundation of your quiet luxury wardrobe lies in the materials. So, think cashmere, silk, fine wool, and high-grade leather rather than synthetic materials like polyester. Not only do these fabrics look and feel luxurious, but they also stand the test of time if you look after them.

When building your quiet luxury wardrobe, do it gradually and prioritize pieces made from these premium materials. For example, add a cashmere sweater, a silk blouse, or a pair of leather shoes. These are investments that will give you style and longevity.

2. Impeccable tailoring

Fit is vital when it comes to quiet luxury. The perfect fit can make all the difference to even the simplest of outfits, making you look much more put together. Whether it’s choosing a blazer that fits you well, a pair of trousers that skim your hips in a flattering way, or a dress that fits without being clingy, tailored pieces will give you a more polished and refined look. Don’t be afraid of going to a seamstress to alter pieces you already have in your closet for a better fit.

3. Timeless silhouettes

Quiet luxury eschews passing trends in favor of timeless silhouettes. So, think classics like trench coats, tailored blazers, sheath dresses, and well-cut pants. These can form the backbone of your quiet luxury wardrobe, giving you extra versatility. You can always add a new trend to your looks but against the backdrop of your classic capsule wardrobe.

4. Neutral colors

This aesthetic favors a neutral color palette, with shades like black, white, gray, beige, and navy forming the core of your wardrobe. These colors look sophisticated, and they’re very versatile, enabling mixing and matching and creating the backdrop for other shades. Or think about other rich-muted tones like deep burgundy and olive green.

5. Subtle details

If you compare designer wear with high-street purchases, you might not be able to tell the difference standing at a distance. But if you move closer, the beauty often lies in the details. This is the same with quiet luxury. You don’t have to go for designer choices but do look for subtle stitching, quality buttons, and small monograms. You’re looking for small touches that elevate your wardrobe away from the ordinary.

6. discreet branding

One of the defining characteristics of quiet luxury is the absence of conspicuous branding. So, opt for unbranded or very subtle branding rather than large logos or signature patterns. You are looking at the quality and design of the piece, not on the label.

7. keep accessories minimal

In keeping with quiet luxury’s understated nature, opt for minimal, high-quality materials. Think leather handbags and shoes and delicate gold or silver pieces.

8. Embrace simplicity

If you have a minimal style personality, you will love the idea of quiet luxury. Avoid overly complicated outfits or excessive layering, and focus your look on clean lines and well-chosen clothes and accessories. This will not only create a chic look but will also allow the quality and craftsmanship of everything you have chosen to shine.

More tips for wearing a denim jacket and dress combination

Consider the fit

Like with every outfit, you’re seeking balance. So consider the fit of your denim jacket in relation to the dress. A fitted jacket works well with voluminous dresses, while an oversized jacket works well with more form-fitting dresses. You could also mirror the look of a formal denim blazer with a formal pencil dress for a work or dinner look.

Experiment with washes

Just like jeans, light-wash denim jackets are great for casual, daytime looks, while darker-wash jackets can be more sophisticated for evening or work settings.

Roll your sleeves

Rolling up the sleeves of your denim jacket can add a casual, relaxed touch to your outfit, making it look effortlessly hip.

Layer for cooler weather

As the weather starts to cool down, you can simply start by adding a denim jacket over your dress. When it cools down further, you can switch your sandals for boots, wear tights and add a scarf.

Of course, Europe is a big place. And, each country has a different culture, personality, and aesthetic. Throughout the summer, Europe’s streets, beaches and cafés come alive with fashion that blends elegance, comfort, and effortless chic. So, whether you’re visiting the Colosseum, lounging on the French Riviera, island hopping in Greece, or embracing Paris’ café culture, the key to dressing the part is fully embracing the European summer aesthetic. Take a look below for lots of tips on how to create the perfect European summer outfits, that combine trends with classics.

How to dress in European summer?

Depending on where you’re traveling from, you may be combining a number of European destinations in one trip. Dressing for a European summer involves balancing style, comfort, and practicality. Weather variations, varied landscapes, and rich cultural heritage call for outfits that are both chic and adaptable.

What is European summer aesthetic?

Marie-Louise wears a striped top and shorts | 40plusstyle.com

The European summer aesthetic is a blend of effortless elegance, timeless style, and a connection to the region’s rich cultural heritage. It’s about looking chic and put-together without appearing overly styled. The aesthetic varies across different parts of Europe, but generally it’s all about looking polished but never overdone.

Marie-Louise @mrsmlmode above looks stylish, comfortable, and classic.

How do I not look like a tourist in Europe’s summer?

Blending in while traveling in Europe during the summer is all about adopting a more subtle, polished approach to your appearance. So, avoid loud logos and anything that screams ‘tourist’. Instead, embrace neutrals, wear stylish footwear, accessorize subtly, and take the opportunity to shop local while you’re on vacation.

What does “euro summer” mean?

Euro Summer is a term often used to describe the quintessential summer experience in Europe, typically characterized by leisurely vacations, cultural exploration, and a blend of style, relaxation, and indulgence. It’s a concept that captures the essence of spending summer in various iconic European destinations, enjoying everything from sun-soaked beaches to historic cities and charming countryside villages.

European summer outfits to look chic no matter where you are on the continent | 40plusstyle.com

Patricia @patriciaafricaiglesias above (read her style interview here) shows how you can combine a ‘basic’ t-shirt with a more flamboyant skirt. She adds summer accessories for a stylish look.

Check out this similar tee, skirt, sandals, tote, earrings, hat and sunglasses.

What is the European summer aesthetic?

There are so many different vacation spots in Europe, and each will require a slightly different packing list.

But when you think about European Summer outfits, you’re imagining that you’re visiting a few destinations and that the outfits you fit into your suitcase are versatile enough to take you from a swim at the beach in the Med, followed by lunch overlooking the water, some sightseeing and a promenade through the streets of Positano, Cannes or Dubrovnik. So transplant yourself in your mind to the Amalfi Coast or the French Riviera and let’s look at some European summer outfit inspiration.

Key things to think about when putting together your European summer outfits

Be inspired by your destinations

European summer outfits take inspiration from chic French style, glamorous Italian dressing, the minimalism of Scandinavia. Be inspired by where you are visiting when packing for your Euro summer.

Key elements to pack

Key elements include sun dresses, matching separates that you can wear together or alone, rattan and top-handle bags.

A curated capsule

You want to put together a curated capsule that you can dress up or down and that will keep you cool in hot temperatures. For more general tips on putting together a capsule, take a look at our ultimate guide to capsule dressing.

Choose the right fabrics

Fabrics to look out for are linen and cotton. Avoid anything that is 100% synthetic as that will make you feel too hot. Instead, choose natural options that will keep your body temperature regulated.

be inspired by Old Money style

There is a lot of crossover between European style and Old Money Style, given that Old Money Style is an aspirational style that is more elevated than you might usually consider for your vacation wardrobe but it still doesn’t look too ‘try hard’. Also, take a look at our article on how to dress for the Eurochic style personality.

5 different European Summer looks that you can mix and match to create countless styles

Below, we’ve put together 5 outfits inspired by different parts of Europe. You can combine the styles of different countries to create many different looks.

1. Effortless Mediterranean Style

Key elements: Lightweight fabrics, natural colors, and relaxed silhouettes.

If you’re heading for a coastal escape, choose breezy linen and cotton dresses, wide-brimmed hats to protect your skin, and espadrilles. Team white and neutral hues with blues that mirror the sea and sky.

Linen will keep you cool and comfortable. A linen shirt dress, paired with leather sandals that are comfy enough for sightseeing, and a woven straw bag will keep you looking chic while being cool, comfortable, and able to walk. Don’t forget your accessories. Oversized sunglasses will protect your eyes and the delicate skin under your eyes. Add delicate gold jewelry for during the day and switch to chunkier jewelry for evening.

Mediterranean style outfit example:

  • Brown leather sandals
  • Straw hat and bag
  • Hoop earrings
  • Oversized sunglasses

White parties are increasingly popular. The dress code is simple yet sophisticated, and the idea is to create a cohesive look for the event. Just wear white. So, it should be easy, right? Well, not necessarily. White can be a tricky color to wear, making choosing the perfect outfit challenging. This article is your ultimate guide to selecting the best white party outfits, so ensure you look stylish while staying within the theme.

What is acceptable to wear at a white party?

Well, as the invitation suggests, at a white party, the dress code typically requires guests to wear all white, although sometimes a touch of color or metallic accents are fine. In fact, gold and silver can look beautiful with white. Below, you will find our guide to what is generally acceptable to wear to a white party.

When did white parties start?

No one is 100% sure when the first white party took place, but they started gaining popularity in the 70s and 80s, particularly among New York’s LGBTQ+ community,. One of the most iconic events is the annual Fire Ireland party in New York.

What shoes to wear to a white party?

Choosing the right shoes for a white party depends on the overall style and formality of your outfit, as well as the venue and setting of the event. Choose flat shoes for more informal, beach or garden get-togethers, while you can opt for heels for formal occasions.

You can stick to white fromtop to toe, or add a different color with your shoe choice. Metallics work particularly well.

Some further considerations

Wearing white can be challenging, because it shows up dirt, as well as making it harder to hide any ‘imperfections’. It’s also important to check for transparency when choosing white. Below are some tips for wearing white successfully.

Choose the right fabric: Look for high-quality, thicker fabrics that aren’t transparent and that hold their shape well.

Your underwear: If you aren’t wearing white swimwear, then be sure to choose nude underwear so it doesn’t show through.

Fit and tailoring: Make sure your white outfits fit well, so your outfit looks polished. If you’re worried about white showing any ‘lumps and bumps,’ then choose draped, cinched or ruched styles.

Mix textures: Wearing all one color can lead to a boring look. To make sure your outfit is interesting, combine different textures. For instance, leather with silk, chiffon with denim or wool with satin.

Choose the right shade of white: Not all whites are the same, and different shades will flatter different skin tones. If you have a cool skin tone, then choose bright, crisp whites with blue undertones. For warmer skin tones, you should look for creamier, ivory-tinted whites.
